The NEPUTNS publishing house was established as a non-profit-making organisation in 1997, in order to realize its initial aim: to publish the Visual Arts Magazine “Studija”. We have a staff of professional artists, journalists, art critics and editors, who regard as their mission the provision of comprehensive information about art in Latvia, and the spreading of knowledge about Latvia in the world. Our publications and a proportion of the magazine content are translated into English, and here we work with the best translators available in Latvia.

In 1999, in parallel with the magazine, we started publishing art books. Since 2000, we have also added poetry and prose.
In 2006, as the field of activities of the publishing house grew wider, two new magazines were added to the list of NEPUTNS’s periodicals: “Dizaina Studija” (Design Studio, focuses on local and world design) and “Foto Kvartāls” (Photo Quarterly, covering the field of photography).

We choose serious, but at the same time attractive publications, intended as a contribution to Latvia’s cultural heritage. These range from popular catalogues for significant art exhibitions to major albums and research volumes, covering important periods or processes in the history of art and culture.

The publishing house attaches great importance to the design and printing quality of its books. This is ensured by our collaboration with Latvia’s most interesting book artists and with printing houses that work to a reliably high standard.

In 2001 the book “The Wooden Heritage of Riga” was awarded by the Latvian Publishers Association as the Book of the Year. The same title in 2004 was awarded to the book “Jūrmala. Nature and Cultural Heritage”.
In 2003 NEPUTNS received an award of the Latvian Artists’ Union in the category “Especially valuable book” for the album of reproductions “Boriss Bērziņš” (compiler Laima Slava).
The annual culture award of the daily “Diena” has been awarded to several authors for books published by NEPUTNS: “Classical Modernism. Early 20th Century Latvian Painting” by Dace Lamberga (2004), “Joe. Life and Art of Jāzeps Grosvalds” by Eduards Kļaviņš (2007), etc.

Within the framework of the annual book design competition “Zelta ābele 2006 the Publishers NEPUTNS received honorary mention of the Latvian Ministry of Culture for the collection of poetry “tagad es esmu aleksandrs" by Knuts Skujenieks. The book was published in 2006, designed by Zane Ērnštreite.
In 2007, among 49 books nominated for the international book design competition "Best Designed Books from all over the World", in Leipzig, included is also translation into Latvian of Rainer Maria Rilke's collection of poetry "Stundu grāmata. Gleznu un tēlu grāmata" (Book of Hours. Books of Images), designed by Ingrīda Zābere and published by NEPUTNS in 2005.

In 2005 the Publishers NEPUTNS launched an e-shop at www.neputns.lv, thus considerably widening the circle of its readers.
