The series “Classics of Latvian Art” is supplemented with a book about Kārlis Miesnieks (1887–1977).

Kārlis Miesnieks

Painter Kārlis Miesnieks, a two metres tall giant from Piebalga who retained his regional accent even while living much of his life in Riga, a passionate hunter and fisherman, was a devoted realist and continuer of tradition, a dedicated depicter of Vidzeme’s landscapes and everyday town and country life, an accomplished still life and portrait artist, one of the most outstanding graphic artists in Latvian history, a drawing teacher for many years at the Latvian Academy of Art, and for a short spell an art exhibition critic. His long life of 90 years meant that he experienced everything our country went through over the course of a century (..). Whatever happened, he always painted prodigiously, for as long as he could see. Part of his oeuvre belongs to the golden fund of 20th century Latvian art.
